VOLUNTEER FAQ'S Q: Who can volunteer? A: We welcome volunteers of all ages at the Moore Humane Society, however for the safety of our younger volunteers, the following policies have been put into place:
• All volunteers under 16 must be accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian at all times. The parent/guardian must attend all trainings and participate fully in the volunteer program. • All volunteers ages 16-17 must have the signature of a parent/guardian.
Please note: We do not have a minimum age requirement but we strongly recommend that children be at least 5 years old. In addition, some of our off-site programs (such as PetSmart) require that the volunteer be at least 18 years old.
Q: What are the steps to becoming a volunteer?
A: All new volunteers must:
Complete a Volunteer Application Form.
Attend a New Volunteer Orientation. Volunteer orientations are held the second Saturday of every month from 12:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Read and sign our Volunteer Agreement.
Decide which program(s) suits you best and create a schedule for volunteering.
Q: What kind of programs are available?
A: We have several different programs, including:
Dog Walker: Walking and spending time with shelter dogs; providing basic care, including providing clean water, brushing and grooming; noticing and reporting any “irregularities” in dog health. This program gives dogs needed exercise, human contact and mental stimulation.
Cat Companion: Spending time with our shelter cats; providing basic care, including scooping litter boxes, providing clean water, brushing and grooming; noticing and reporting any “irregularities” in cat health.
Special Events: Help represent MHS at various off-site events; may also include proving basic care for animals during event.
PetSmart: Help represent MHS at PetSmart, assist with adoption questions and inquiries, and provide basic animal care.
Q: Can I bring my kids with me to volunteer?
A: We welcome families to volunteer together! All family members who wish to volunteer must complete all of the steps and complete all of the paperwork before they may volunteer. In addition, all children under 16 must be supervised by a parent/guardian at all times.
Q: Is there a time requirement? A: We do not have a weekly/monthly time requirement; however, we do ask that you volunteer for at least one hour per shift.
Q: Can I adopt from Moore Humane Society while I am a volunteer? A: You may adopt but we do require a 90 day waiting period before adopting to be sure the decision is made after careful consideration. We want volunteers to make that decision with their heart as well as their mind and not on impulse.
