Safe at Last... Sloopy was found lying along side Pee Dee road on a frigid February evening. She had bite wounds over her entire body and was barely hanging on to life. Moore Humane Society took her to a local veterinarian for treatment. Testing determined that Sloopy was not only fighting severe malnutrition, dehydration, and a raging infection due to multiple bite wounds, but she was also positive for Ehrlichiosis, a tick borne disease. The veterinarian prescribed an aggressive treatment of antibiotics and steroids.
When Moore Humane Society notified Animal Control of Sloopy’s condition, we were informed that they were pursuing cruelty charges against a man who lived on Pee Dee Road involved in dog fighting.
After weeks of follow up visits to the vet and changes in treatment, Sloopy still wasn’t gaining weight and her chances for recovery were diminishing. Sloopy had severe anemia and her red blood count was continuing to plummet. According to her lab results, we were told she shouldn’t be alive. Sloopy was hospitalized and it was decided that euthanasia was necessary in order to end her suffering. But when we looked into Sloopy’s soulful eyes, they pleaded with us not to give up on her. As long as Sloopy’s will to live was so strong, we knew we had to give her every opportunity to do so.
With proper treatment, Sloopy’s progress was slow but steady. Her will to live and appreciation of life grew stronger with each passing day. It took many months, but Sloopy eventually recovered from her multiple injuries and illnesses.
Although Sloopy was subjected to horrible abuse and neglect by her owner(s), she is the epitome of gentleness and grace and has been since the first day she was brought to us for care. Sloopy’s joyful disposition, willingness to please, and inner beauty more than compensate for the physical scars she bears from her past abuse. Many abused and neglected dogs have passed through our doors, but none have endured so much for so long and managed to maintain such strength and gentleness of spirit as Sloopy…she shines from within.
So we say, “Hang on Sloopy, Sloopy hang on” until we find you a new home and a much better life than what you have known.
Sloopy being brought to safety.
